Small Village Bozhentsi
Before I start speaking about the village Bozhentsi — a really interesting travel destination — let me retell a legend.
When the Bulgarian city Tarnovgrad was captured and fell under the Turkish yoke, an old woman and her relatives ran away to save their lives. The woman’s name was Bojana and her predecessors were the brave Bulgarian kings. It was the Balkan – one of the best places to travel around the world — that welcomed the refugees to give them water for drinking, and wood and stones for building homes. That was how the Bulgarian village Bozhentsi was established.
This beautiful village has 600 years of history. It is situated on the slopes of the mountain Stara Planina in a beautiful hollow with a small river, some 16 km east from the Bulgarian city Gabrovo. Since 1964, Bozhentsi with its few houses and public buildings was announced an Architectural and Historical Center. And people, fond of this antique civilization, visit this romantic travel destination throughout the whole year to enjoy its soft winters and cool summers.
Bozhentsi was the last travel destination of my trip throughout Bulgaria. When I arrived to the village with a group of tourists, it was already dark, and the guide led us to one of the houses in the village. It was an amazing house with old brown antique furniture and old carpets of traditional red, green and white colors, which gave a feeling that you are somewhere in the 16th century.
The next day we visited the house-museum of the Popovi brothers. The house was an architectural and historic reserve of the Bulgarian renaissance architecture. It was surrounded by a wooden fence, and wooden stairs led to the house. The walls and the ceilings of almost all the rooms were covered with dark brown wood. In one of the rooms among different articles for everyday use there were parts of wooden sledges and a special construction for making thread from wool.
There was also one room intended for women with a special secret door leading to the second floor from where men could hear the conversation of women quite secretly. It represented the style of the household of the 19th century.
Later we continued out trip into the woods by the road called Roman Road. The history of the Road dates back to the beginning of the fourth century. It used to link the Big Road (Nikopolis Ad Istrum – Augusta Trayana — Constantinople) with the Gradishte locality above the city of Gabrovo. The road starts near Bozhentsi and is about eight km long.
This small Bulgarian village is one of the most preferred tourist attractions not only in the Bulgarian, but also in the international tourism system. It is really one of the best places to travel — a calm and hidden place where you feel the peaceful silence of Mother Nature.
