I can assure you that wild and beautiful nature that is hidden from many eyes is much more appealing and impressive than what is obvious. If you agree with this thought and are into hiking, then I have a perfect travel destination for you.
Armenia, which is situated in the South Caucasus, is well known for its majestic mountain ranges. Its nature almost always is rocky and sometimes even hard for human feet. This is one of the best countries to go hiking.
You will find different mountains that can be perfect trip destinations for hiking but if you are looking for indescribable wild beauty, head towards Mt. Azhdahak (11,801 ft).
According to Armenian mythology, the word “Azhdahak” means “man-dragon.” You’ll understand why the mountain was given this name as soon as you see its red surface.
This mountain is volcanic, which you can guess from its cone-like shape. It is the highest mountain in the Geghama mountain range. Azhdahak is hidden deep in the mountains and valleys, which will take you some time and transportation to get to. It’s best to go with professional hiking tour guides.
First, you have to get to a nearby village and heavy-duty 4 x 4 vehicle that will be able to take you up the mountains. Your tour guide will take you to your destination. This way you won’t get lost half way there and will save your time as well as strength.
The way through the mountains is really breathtaking. Even in summer you’ll cross several fields of snow before you reach the foot of the mountain. From there it’s not a very long distance, but the way is very rocky and bumpy. If you have hiking poles, take them along, as they will give you lots of help even on the grass and stones.
On your way to the mountain there are many ancient petroglyphs (carvings on stones). You may even discover one if you are attentive.
