Those who plan fabulous Mediterranean cruises can choose from over one hundred ports on the world’s largest sea. While some of the less crowded ports in places less known hold hidden and less known treasures to explore, most Mediterranean cruises stop at famous places that people who make the trip as a once-in-a-lifetime experience wish to see. Here are five of the top ports where cruise ships stop for sightseeing:
Athens
Known as the birthplace of western culture, the ancient city of Athens has ruins dating to before recorded history. The metropolis is the capital city of Greece. Found throughout Athens are fascinating sites, restaurants, and amazing views.
Barcelona
One of the leading contemporary cities on the shores of the Mediterranean, Barcelona is alive. The city is known for its culture, history, and art. Capital of Catalonia, the metropolis is home to the delicious cuisine of the province of Catalonia. The city has so much to offer from the architecture of Gaudi to the splendid parks and museums.
Cannes
This coastal city is situated on the French Riviera. A high-end seaside town, many celebrities take holidays in Cannes especially during the Film Festival. The castle ruins at the top of the historic district give spectacular views of the city and coast. The city has a covered market and an exciting waterfront with cafes, restaurants, and luxury hotels.
Casablanca
Morocco’s largest city, Casablanca is a busy metropolis. Still, it has some intriguing sites to visit. King Hassan II Mosque has the globe’s highest minaret. Welcoming non-Muslims, the huge mosque has ornate features including those with water fountain fixtures. Historic buildings and market places provide souvenirs and entertainment for visitors.
Naples
One of the Mediterranean’s largest seaports, Naples is a historic city to visit with more ancient churches than any urban area at over 440. The historic city center is large as well. The Egg Castle on a tiny peninsula in the port has a museum of prehistoric items. People enjoy walking along the waterfront and biking. Then, the snorkeling and diving around the Phlegraean Islands explores the underwater Baiae Archaeological Park.
