World Expo 2008 Opening In Zaragoza Spain World Expo 2008 Opening In Zaragoza, SpainZaragoza is the capital city of the autonomous community and former Kingdom of Aragon in Spain. It spreads around both sides of the river Ebro. Located approximately 250 kilometers from Madrid and Barcelona, the city is about 2,000 years old and one of the greatest areas in Spain.

Zaragoza is also a city known for its Fairs and Congresses and hosted three large exhibitions in 1868, 1885 and 1980. Now, from June 14 – September 14, Zaragoza will be hosting World Expo 2008 with the participation of 104 countries. The Budget Travel posts details about the exhibition.

The Expo will address the theme of water and sustainable development, emphasizing the critical role that increasingly imperiled water resources play in our lives. The Expo’s website says the event will take place on a thousand square meters of exhibition space and launch three notable new buildings: the largest freshwater aquarium in Europe (5,000 specimens, including giant Nile crocodiles!), the Water Tower, which has a floor shaped like a water droplet, and the Bridge Pavilion (above), a stunning, two-story span that drops pedestrians onto the main Expo site.

The city is at the moment in the process of preparing for the Expo and a new third Millennium Bridge connecting both banks of the river Ebro is also being constructed. Spain Info writes about the extent of construction in the city.

Zaragoza City Hall will provide the land on which Expo grounds will be located, and will build the Expo village and city, the approaches to the grounds and the infrastructures to be used by the Expo venue. Moreover, it will undertake the approaches to the Third Millennium bridge and the water supply and drainage facilities for the city. While the Aragon Government will participate in infrastructure projects, such as the Goya Venue, metropolitan and urban transport and the construction of a Conference Centre. As regards environment plans, the Regional Government will reclaim the banks of rivers in the province and make landscape and facility improvements, by adapting the environment site of La Alfranca.
