Philippines Typhoon, Ship Lost

As a result of a horrible typhoon in Philippines, a ferry sailing from the capital Manila to the central island of Cebu, sank. More than 800 passengers are missing with only four people so far known to have survived. Four bodies were found in San Fernando, but the remainder are considered lost.

As REUTERS reports , many of the passengers didn’t manage to get off the ship on time. As the survivors later said, the life-rafts sank in the water.

“Many of us jumped, the waves were so huge, and the rains were heavy,” a survivor identified only as Jesse told local radio.

[...]

“There was just one announcement over the megaphone, about 30 minutes before the ship tilted to its side.” “Immediately after I jumped, the ship tilted, the older people were left on the ship.”

According to RTE News, it took only fifteen minutes for the ship to completely sink.

A police boat reached the site early this morning, and officers found the ferry flipped over with only its bow visible above the water line. The ferry sank about 3km from shore near Sibuyan Island.

All we can do now, is to only hope that more survivors will be discovered.
