Mediterranean Environment Must Be Protected

More and more hotels and tourist facilities have sprung up recently in Morocco and it’s no wonder that tourism ministers have agreed that measures must be taken in order to protect the coast. The Mediterranean is under threat of becoming one of the regions most vulnerable to climate changes.

The issue has been widely discussed during the first conference of Mediterranean tourist development, according to TravelDailyNews report.

Ministers of the 27 member states of the European Union, together with nine Arab countries, the Palestinian Territories, Turkey, Israel and Albania attended the first ever conference of this kind on Mediterranean tourist development and underlined the importance of preventing and reducing the negative impacts of urbanization and non-sustainable land use for tourism infrastructure construction, especially at coastal areas.

More important has been the need to consider enhancing awareness among stakeholders and the private sector on the issue. In addition, ministers promoted the realization of measures and actions for developing sustainable tourism in the EuroMed region. Philippe de Fontaine Vive, Vice President of the European Investment Bank commented on the issue.

“A central condition of the growth of tourism is that preservation of the environment should be at the heart of tourist projects so that its potential can bring true benefits to partner countries in the long term,”
