Johannesburg – The New Soccer Capital

Johannesburg The New Football Capital1 Johannesburg – The New Soccer CapitalOn Friday, the 11th of June South Africa exploded with the FIFA World Cup Championship. The host city of the championship Johannesburg, or Jozi, as the natives and soccer (called football the world over) fans call it now, has become one of the hottest partying and vacation trip destinations for thousands of soccer fans from all over the world.

Several months ago not many people would be able to say where the largest city of South Africa is or where it is situated. But the history and geographical features of this unique destination are not the aim of this post. The customs of Johannesburg are the topic.

One example are the vuvuzela horns, which are turning the soccer  games into an amazing, ear-striking performance. These horns can rival the noise made by a grass-cutter. Imagine being in a whole stadium where everyone has a vuvuzela horn. To me, the horns blaring  sound like a horde of bees flying around when I’m watching the soccer games on TV.

Another cool thing worth seeing is the special soccer hat, or better call it a head-sculpture. The South Africans are keen on building the whole history of their favorite soccer team on their hats, in form of hand-formed structures made of anything you can imagine – from posters and photos, to feathers, toys or soccer balls!

The third is their dances. All of us have seen their unique dances, at least on TV. Now imagine those dances, customized to match the football fest – with all the singing and horn-music to go along with them.

Oh, I want to be a part of that huge celebration! I would love to be there in the stadium and feel the whole partying mood on my own skin. Too bad I’m stuck in Berlin!
