Brazil Faces Dengue OutbreakBrazil faced an outbreak of dengue this week. So far, dengue has killed 67 people in Brazil’s state of Rio de Janeiro state. Less than half the deaths are children under 13.

Dengue fever, the common form of this disease, is caused by some infected mosquitoes, mainly the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, also known as yellow fever mosquito. Gadling reports that there are around 10 million cases of dengue around the world.

We don’t know whether the deaths were attributed to the more severe form of dengue, dengue hemorrhagic fever, which can be fatal if unrecognized and not properly treated. With treatment, fatalities due to dengue hemorrhagic fever, which is characterized by abnormal internal or external bleeding, can be less than 1 percent.

According to CNN, the Brazilian authorities have called the situation an epidemic.
