Tirana, The Non-Urban City: Part 2

Tirana. The Non Urban City Part 2 Tirana, The Non Urban City: Part 2As I was telling in my previous post, Tirana is one of those cities that are interesting due to their simplicity.

Apart from the mosque, another interesting site in Tirana is a very unique building, also known as the pyramid. At first, it was a museum that was dedicated to the dictator-cum-pharaoh Enver Hoxha. Then it became a conference center and a disco club called “The Mummy.” Now it is being renovated to host a theater.

If you are a fan of ancient buildings and castles, you should definitely see the Petrela Castle. It dates back to the fifth century AD and was once called Petralba (meaning “the stone of Albanians” in Greek). This castle is built right on top of a mountain. Due to its position, you can enjoy the amazing view it offers. It’s also a great place to take some fantastic photos.

Tirana isn’t an expensive city for a global traveler. The restaurants and the cafes are cheap, and if you are not a big fan of fancy food, you can spend only $15-$25 a day.

You will have a hard time trying to find a restaurant that will offer local cuisine. There is fast food in most places: hamburgers, gyros and pizzas. The UFO University cafe is a nice place to visit and don’t forget to try their delicious ice cream.

When walking in the city one of the most important safety tips is to always to look around you when you cross a street. Even in the center of the city you won’t see traffic lights everywhere, and people cross the street however and whenever they can.

Also, try to stay away from beggars. You might come across a few in the streets or even in some of the cafes.

Still, Tirana is a very nice city to visit. It might not offer the luxurious vacation you always dreamed about or superb fashion boutiques and malls, but it’s surely a very interesting place, especially if you are tight on a budget.
