Berlin’s railway has refused to allow a mobile Holocaust exhibition to stop in its central station. The exhibition is being held to remember the 11,400 Jewish children who were deported from France to the Auschwitz death camp from 1942 to 1944. Deutsche Bahn has announced that the train carrying the exhibition would disturb the normal rail traffic in German main station-Hauptbahnhof.
According to News24, Michael Szentei-Heise, the leader of the Jewish community has attacked Deutsche Bahn chief Hartmut Mehdorn for the decision.
“a Nazi at heart … (who) would have arranged the deportation of Jews with great conviction.”
Deutsche Bahn has responded by threatening to sue Michael Szentei-Heise. Regardless, the movable exhibition has since changed its plans.
The organizers said it would Sunday stop at the small Grunewald station in Berlin which was suggested as an alternative by Deutsche Bahn and is home to the “Platform 17″ Holocaust memorial.
The Holocaust train exhibition opened in Berlin this January and has already traveled through eight other stations in Germany. It also plans to continue traveling to Poland and Auschwitz.
