Halal Inn, the country’s first alcohol free Islamopub, has opened in Britain. The pub offers its visitors not only tea and coffee but also fizzy drinks, fruit juices with non-alcoholic spritzers.
According to DINAH LORD, even though many pubs are being closed down across the country, the Halal Inn’s owners have a confidence that their pub will be successful anywhere that has a large Muslim community.
No booze, no televisions. No ban on women customers, but they sure looked thin on the ground in the article’s pictures…not too many “typical white persons” there, either. And I bet it’s a real blast come prayer time. The thought of everybody stepping back from the snooker table and hitting the floor, then sticking their butts up in the air sure sounds like a lot of fun to me.
Telegraph.co.uk reports that the owners of the Halal Inn pub; Azizur Rahman and his business partner Muzahid Khan, decided to take over the Westwood Inn, spotting a gap in the present day market.
Traditional Islamic nasheed songs are piped into the bar and boards for karam, a billiards-style game popular across Asia, are on hand. The inn also features a prayer room and steam room – but no beer. Wine and spirits are also banned.
The paper quotes Khan commenting on the new venture.
“It’s a gathering place for people who abide by strict Islamic rulings and don’t like going to places where they serve alcohol. Muslims are a major consumer group. And it was easy to replace the word Westwood with Halal.”
