Swiss History: Gruyeres

Swiss History: GruyeresSwitzerland: land of cheese, chocolate and trains, and one of the most famous European destinations. Start planning your summer vacation choosing from Europe packages that will by all means include this magnificent country.

Of course, tasty food and trains are not the only unique things connected with Switzerland. I’ll want you to start your visit there by seeing one of its famous sites, Chateau de Gruyeres (Castle Gruyeres).

While exploring this castle you pass eight centuries of history and culture. It was constructed at the end of 13th century in the small village Gruyeres. At first the castle belonged to the Gruyeres. In the first half of the 20th century the State of Fribourg bought the castle and made it a museum.

Now the museum has a permanent collection but from time to time there are also some temporary exhibits of works by modern Swiss artists. A 30-minute performance just in castle yard can be a fascinating sight to see. The short show recreates small historical events which have taken place in the castle. The actors are dressed in medieval fashion and the whole performance is really very impressive.

It is very easy to get to the castle. If you go by car you can park in an area very close to the castle. While going by train be sure to get off at the nearest train station which is Gruyeres-Gare/Pringy.

There are fantastic Europe destinations that are all worth seeing. But if you happen to visit Switzerland, definitely head to Gruyeres to experience a piece of history.
