Kom Ombo: A Mysterious Temple In Egypt

Kom Ombo: A Mysterious Temple In EgyptI wonder if there’s anything more interesting and memorable than traveling. Every destination is unique and has its own places of interest to offer travelers.

I have traveled much and I got a lot of impressions and memories associated with various countries. In this post I’ll tell about one of my tours to Egypt.

Egypt is a country of wonderful temples, pyramids, minarets, deserts and oases. In Egypt I was particularly impressed by the temple Kom Ombo, which I visited during one of my Egypt sightseeing tours.

The temple Kom Ombo, which is very close to the Nile, is a double temple. One side was built to honor the god Haroesis and the other side is dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek. Egyptians had a strong belief that by honoring the horrifying crocodile as a god, they would avoid attacks by the barbarian tribes.

Many years ago the Nile washed away a segment of the temple. Most of the forecourt was washed away and today merely some low walls and stumps of pillars have remained.

I entered the temple from the eastern side, where I saw an ancient gate built by Ptolemy XII. After crossing the gate, I discovered a small room on my right, which was dedicated to the Goddess Hathor. You can see the mummies of crocodiles that are displayed in the room. It’s believed that crocodiles once wandered and sunbathed on the nearby island.

The temple Kom Ombo is beautiful, especially at sunset, when the temple changes its color to gold.
