Easter Events in Italy

easter events in italy Easter Events in ItalyEaster, “Pasqua” in Italian, is a cheerful holy celebration, and the Italians are always looking forward to it with great enthusiasm. In Italy it is the second most important religious holiday (after Christmas).

Easter is observed to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus after his crucifixion. Easter events at Italy are accompanied by many rituals.

On Sunday morning, the bells ring out, announcing to people that Jesus  is alive. When people hear the bells, they kiss and hug one another. A lot of children wake up on Easter Sunday and find eggs in all over the rooms. They search for Easter eggs in the nests that they have put in their yards or gardens. It is said that the eggs have been bought from Rome. And it’s believed that the bell ringing had gone to visit the Pope and came back with eggs.

On Palm Sunday, the priests bless palms and olive branches in the churches and give them to people. Lots of people come to St. Peter’s square on Palm Sunday to receive blessed palms.

Another remarkable Easter traditions is Scoppio del Carro (explosion of the cart). On this Easter event white oxen carry a decorated wagon through Florence. They carry it to Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore. There the Archbishop sends a dove-shaped rocket into the cart, lighting the fireworks held in the cart.

Then the fasting for Lent takes place. It is preceded by a carnival that begins in January and lasts until Ash Wednesday. Wearing of masks in an important part of the carnival. Various types of masks are worn to create spirit and witch looks.

If you are in Italy for your holidays at this time of year make sure to participate in Easter events.

Buona Pasqua!
