View The World’s Highest Bridge
Have you ever thought about how useful bridges are? Bridge building is one of the most important feats of engineering. Beginning centuries ago up to the present, bridges immensely promote the development of cultures, environments and lives by connecting previously disconnected civilizations.
There are millions of bridges spread over the Earth, but only some of them amaze tourists. Among the famous bridges in the world there’s one you should pay special attention to–the Millau Viaduct. It’s the highest bridge in the world. If you live on the edge and don’t fear heights, you should take a look at this impressive bridge yourself.
The Millau Viaduct is a road-bridge across the Tarn River Valley near the city of Millau in the mountains of southern France. It’s considered to be the highest vehicle bridge in the world, with a height falling between that of Eiffel Tower and the Empire State Building. Designed by British architect Norman Foster and engineered by French engineer Dr. Michel Virlogeux, this amazing man-made structure is viewed as a fine work of art and construction marvel, completed at the beginning of the 21 century. This bridge has twice exceeded the previous tallest vehicle bridge in Europe, the Europabrücke in Austria.
The Millau bridge (as it’s often called), was built to ease heavy traffic congestion during the summer vacation season. It leads travelers to the Mediterranean coastal resorts, which are perfect stops after enjoying the marvelous view of the valley. The Grand Causses regional national park is also a must-see.
The only thing that may limit your excitement is that you’re not allowed to stop on the bridge to satisfy your amazement. Instead, you can visit the information center on the north side of the bridge where, besides learning historical facts about the world’s highest bridge, you can hike up to a point high above the bridge itself to catch the perfect glimpse of it.
