The Project Management Team of the Laguindingan Airport Development Project (LADP) is in the last stage of the pre-qualification process and will soon announce qualified bidders for the project. The project to build the Laguindingan International Airport has been in the planning stage since the 1990s.
According to What’s Up In The Philippines, the Laguindingan International Airport will replace the existing Lumbia facility.
The main civil works involves the construction of the runway and the buildings for new passenger and cargo terminals, air traffic control tower/operation, maintenance, power house, administration, cold water receiving station, fuel farm, and waste water treatment plant.
SkyscraperCity reports that the project has been postponed for several times because of the unexpected increase in its estimated cost. When the project was first envisioned in 1991, it demanded only 900 Million Pesos to be completed, while in 2002, it was already 5.3 Billion Pesos and ,at last, today the project costs around 7.853 Billion Pesos, equivalent to 167 Million US Dollars.
This revised cost was discussed with officials of the Export-Import Bank of Korea and they have expressed their willingness to extend additional loans for the project as endorsed by NEDA. The project will be handled by Korean contractors as specified in the loan agreement. The winning contractor however is free to subcontract or forge a tie-up with a Filipino company to handle the job.
Engineer Della P. Capicenio, the Project Manager of LADP, describes the yet-to-be-built airport as “a much safer airport compared with Lumbia.”
“That’s number one. That is the main purpose of this airport, to have a safer airport in terms of operation etc. The second is the comfort of the passengers, this has a bigger terminal building and it will have Boarding bridges like in most modern airports.”
