Abclocal reports that United intends to layoff about 1,450 pilots by the end of the summer.

In a statement, United says, “As we reduce the size of our fleet and take actions companywide to enable United to compete in an environment of record fuel prices, we must take the difficult, but necessary step to reduce the number of people we have to run our business; and today, we notified our pilots about expected furloughs.”

In addition to that United will soon be cutting hundreds of other jobs in the coming years.

“The numbers here are staggering and this may not be the end yet. There’s certainly flight attendant workforce issues.

As AMT reports the company has been taking steps to compensate for rising fuel costs.

Chicago-based United parent UAL Corp. has made a series of moves in recent weeks to battle rising fuel costs, including grounding at least 70 planes. On Friday, UAL announced it will start requiring minimum stays for nearly all domestic coach seats beginning in October and is raising its cheapest fares by as much as $90 one-way.

United spokeswoman Megan McCarthy says the initial furlough notices will go out between mid-July until mid-September.
