Air Tran Adding Flights
While Midwest Airlines and its Midwest Connect regional carrier are dropping flights to Baltimore, Fort Lauderdale and Fort Myer, AirTran Airways, on the contrary, is expected to add its services from Milwaukee to Baltimore and to several Florida destinations – a reaction to coming service cuts by Midwest Airlines. AirTran’s new schedule to Florida will now offer more flights to Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, to Tampa and service to Fort Myers, increasing flights from weekly to daily. AirTran also plans to add flights to its Milwaukee-Las Vegas run. All these adds are expected to take effect September through December.
As JSonline reports, Air Tran wanted to cooperate with Midwest, but almost a 47% stake of it was sold to Northwest..
Last year AirTran mounted a hostile takeover attempt of Midwest Air Group Inc., the Oak Creek-based corporate parent of Midwest Airlines and Midwest Connect. Midwest Air was instead sold to TPG Capital, a Fort Worth, Texas, investment firm, and Northwest Airlines Corp. of Eagan, Minn.
AirTran wil only reduce flights from Milwaukee to Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego and Boston, beginning from September, whereas Midwest, because of record-high jet fuel prices, will be cutting almost half of its flights, as well as 40% of its 3,000-plus work force, chicagotribune.com reports.
