New York: Woodstock Museum

Woodstock MuseumA new museum dedicated to the famous Woodstock pop festival will open on June 2nd in Bethel, New York. The Museum at Bethel Woods will exhibit personal stories, multimedia experiences and programs on the music and political protests of the 1960s.

The three-day festival will focus on the “sex, drugs and rock’n'roll” counterculture of the period and will be accompanied by the music of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, the Who and many others.

BBC News reported on plans for the museum in 2007.

Politicians voted to strip the $1 million funding sought by New York Senators Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer for the museum. Bethel Woods has already received $15 million (£7.3m) in state funding.

The Woodstock festival was billed as “three days of peace and love”.

The Woodstock Museum is built on top of the hill not far from the place where the festival stage was located. The museum is just a part of the huge Bethel Woods Center for the Arts which hosts a variety of events. The complex has already planned its program for this summer. It includes performances by The B-52s, Ringo Starr, the New York Philharmonic, Donna Summer, The Klezmatics, the Boston Pops and many others.
